![]() Contrary to its gentle image of later years, created largely through one of the great public relations machines in corporate history, Ma Bell in its first few decades was close to a public menace-a ruthless, rapacious, grasping “Bell Octopus,” as its enemies would describe it to the press. But how they worked was to Edison less important. Edison’s genius lay in making new inventions work, or in making existing inventions work better than anyone had thought possible. With this in mind, one might think of a host of reasons to look back at these old inventions, these forgotten engineers, these lost worlds. Yet understanding the circumstances that led up to that unusual winter of 1947 at Bell Labs, and what happened there in the years afterward, promises a number of insights into how societies progress.Where is the knowledge we have lost in information? -T. ![]()

![]() ![]() It is filled with themes of insanity, superstition, and truth/lies. There is this constant creepy atmosphere, making you question everything you know about the characters and reality. There are many things I liked about the book. But it too is headed towards disaster, prompted by some evil and dark force. Four years later, Annie takes a job on the Titanic‘s sister ship the Britannic. But soon the passengers realize that something darker is happening on this ship, which will lead to tragedy. ![]() Synopsis: On the maiden voyage of the RMS Titanic, the passengers begin to experience strange, almost otherworldly happenings as if by a haunting, including stewardess Annie Hebbley and 1st class passenger Mark Fletcher. And, while my feelings were mixed, I did find it to be a creepy and interesting novel. When I saw this book coming out, which takes a more supernatural twist on the real-life tragedy, I felt I had to read it. I am drawn to any retelling of the sinking of the Titanic. ![]() ![]() Adults who feared losing an ""old America"" regarded youth as damned, while progressives found their ""freedom"" beautiful. Championing individual freedom in private behavior, Twenties' youth dramatically changed American style and sexuality. ![]() Fass describes the youth culture, which flourishes when family influence fades and peer group pressure becomes the main socializing force, as a more complicated phenomenon. The familiar Twenties' characters are here but not as simple symbols of alienation. Another book on the roaring Twenties? Yes, but this careful, somewhat labored study of America's first real youth culture-the white, middle-class college students of the Twenties-deepens our understanding of the Scott Fitzgerald scene. ![]() ![]() ![]() The Mammoth Book of Regency Romance (Softcover) Pub.
